Toothaches or tooth pain, trauma, and broken teeth can be some of most painful experiences you can have. The pain, when left unattended, can rival broken bones, labor pains, and even true neuralgia (intense neurologic pain of unknown origin).

Why is a toothache so painful? There are a few reasons. First, a toothache is literally in your head. This provides little opportunity to find relief. For example, if you have a sprained ankle, you can sit down, elevate it, and remove your weight from it. Since a tooth is intimately connected with so many things that we do, it is hard to get away from it!

Teeth are unique in that they are some of the only parts of our body that are “rigid” and unable to heal themselves. When the nerve of a tooth is injured by decay, fracture, or trauma, it swells, just like any other part of the body. However, with a tooth being “rigid,” there is no where for that swelling to go, and the pressure that builds up causes your tooth to hurt. Unlike an ankle that can swell outward, in your tooth, the pressure continues to build until pain becomes unbearable. Fortunately, there are ways we can help you temporarily manage your pain until you can come in to see us!

Icing the sore area can help, but usually, only minor relief is experienced. Over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen and Tylenol may also provide temporary relief. The root of the problem, addressing the injured or infected tooth, will be done by Dr. Bowen at your appointment.
