Sedation dentistry is an increasingly popular way to have your dental care done. Dr. Bowen, your dentist in Orem, Utah, is certified in both IV and oral sedation, as well as in ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and BLS/CPR (basic life support).
Sedation is used for many reasons and procedures, ranging from cleanings to impacted wisdom teeth. The goal of sedation is to be able to have your appointment done comfortably, reduce anxiety you may have, and improve the quality of dental care delivered.
Prior to having sedation, Dr. Bowen will take a thorough medical history, which will allow him to taper the sedation to your individual needs. During IV (moderate/conscious) sedation, a combination of drugs will be used to relax you and reduce any potential pain or discomfort associated with your treatment.
Many patients fall asleep during sedation, though this in itself is not the goal of sedation. Most patients do not remember their appointment, due to the amnesia effects of the medications used. Only a few will remember parts, if anything, about their appointment.
